How do wrinkle relaxers work?
Wrinkle relaxers, such as Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport, are each a neuromodulator injectable, also known as a “muscle relaxer.” Upon injection, these products, each of which contains a form of the purified botulinum strain, blocks specific cell signals. These cell signals would otherwise cause your muscles to contract and twitch, which forces your skin to fold and crease.
The targeted muscles are simply paralyzed, which helps your skin stay smooth and wrinkle-free. What’s unique about these products is that they are designed in such a way that they only effect the injected area and not the surrounding muscles. This effect helps ensure surrounding muscles continue contracting as normal — no frozen look to worry about. The wrinkle relaxers prevent the deepening of existing wrinkles, dynamic lines or from creating new ones.
At Image Revolution Health and Medical Spa, we use LaseMD Ultra from Lutronic. LaseMD Ultra is a skin resurfacing treatment that can address a variety of skin concerns. What can wrinkle relaxers be used for?
Wrinkle Relaxers are suitable for everyone. Often our younger patients will book this treatment to prevent wrinkles from forming. If you have mature skin, it is often used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles for a refreshed and lifted look.
Most people don’t know that wrinkle relaxers can be used for a number of other things besides our faces.

What can I expect during a service?
When you come to Image Revolution Health and Wellness for your consultation, Dr McGuire or Dr Alam will have a one-on-one conversation with you about your concerns. It’s important to let them know which areas bother you and what you expect from your treatment so they can determine which treatment is best for you.
Once you and your doctor agree on your treatment, they can inject either Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin (depending on what’s best for you) into specific muscles in your targeted area. While you may notice some gradual improvements immediately, it generally takes up to one or two weeks for your optimal Botox results to shine through.
Is There Any Downtime?
In most cases, you can immediately return to your daily activities. It is recommended that you avoid the following for at least 4-hours following treatment for optimal results:
- Exercise
- Rubbing the injected area
- Taking NSAID’s, aspiring and other blood-thinning medications
Some people develop bumps, redness or swelling around the injection site, which last no more than 30-minutes.
How Long Does Each Treatment Last? How Do I Maintain My New Look?
Wrinkle Relaxers are considered a temporary fix for fine lines and grooves. Unlike surgery, they do not permanently change your appearance. For most patients, this is desired; non-surgical wrinkle fillers produce a more natural result without the same tell-tale signs of “having work done.”
To maintain your appearance long-term, we recommend occasional maintenance injections. Typically, a single session or treatment remains in effect for between three months to 6 months. Some patients may need maintenance even less than this, especially if change is particularly subtle.
